1. After Gabi is injured, the doctor gives her a tonic. Gabi questions the doctor several times what is in it but he refuses to tell. Would have you taken the tonic in Gabi situation?

At first I thought no. But after being so sick for the last couple of weeks and things not looking better anytime soon I think I would try just about anything to make it go away. So yes I would.

2. Before the games Gabi asks Lia to let Lord Forabosch win in the archery event as people especially Lord Forabosch are becoming suspicious of them. But during the games Lord Forabosch upsets Lia trying to throw her off her game. So Lia decides to win. Do you think she did the right thing by not letting Lord Forabosch bully her or do you think she took an unnecessary risk?

I think Lia did the right thing. I personally couldn't have put up with Lord Forabosch and would have loved to put him in his place.

3. When Gabi is dying and she and Lia decide to return to the tombs so they can get the cure at home but they have to tell Marcello the truth. Even though Marcello thinks that it is madness that they are from the future he believes in Gabi because he loves her. Do you think this is believable? What would you have done if you were Marcello?

Hmmm I don't know if I would have believed it especially from someone I have only know a short time. But love is pretty powerful and makes you have faith in people.

4. In the end Gabi and Lia return home. Do you think Gabi will return to Marcello? Would you go back?

Yes I am sure Gabi will go back. I couldn't walk away from Marcello. For true love I would pretty much do anything even if it is a little bit scary.

5. Looking back at Waterfall what was your favourite moment?

Well since I am a romantic fool it would have to be that kiss!

Waterfall Wednesday - Week 4 - Chapters 18-23

For the period August 31st to September 28th each week we re-read chapters from Waterfall by Lisa Tawn Bergren and answer five questions. 1. Gabi and Lia both face several life and death situations in these chapters, having to pick up weapons in defense of those they love and experiencing first hand the brutality of close combat. If you had the choice between picking up a weapon and standing on the front lines or staying behind to tend to the wounded as necessary, which would you choose?

Hmmm....I don't think I would like to sit behind and not know what is happening to the ones I love but I think I am more of a carer than a fighter. So I would stay behind and care for the wounded.

2. Both girls get to wear extraordinary gowns to their victory celebration; what would your dream medieval gown look like?

Something elegant yet striking in a beautiful shade of purple.

3. Gabi has crude stitches put in and must endure both their removal as well as the cauterization of the wound. How is your threshold for pain? Do you think you would have simply gritted your teeth as Gabi does?

Yes I think so in the circumstances. I am not too bad with pain. I handle modern day stitches, needles etc well.

4. Marcello wants to properly court Gabi after they express mutual feelings of affection, wanting to speak with her mother about his intentions. What do you think is the most romantic aspect of medieval courtship?

The most romantic aspect of the relationship back then would be how special a simple kiss is. It would pretty much mean you are in love and want to spend forever together.

5. Gabi and Lia find themselves with conflicting desires toward the end with Lia wanting to return home and Gabi hoping to stay. Do you think that Gabi is being unfair to Lia for wanting to stay, or is Lia being unfair to Gabi for demanding they go? A little of both?

A little of both. I don't think either option is fair to either girl. That is a hard one to comprise on because true love is hard to fine but family is also the most important thing.

Great. He was a hottie, a good kisser, and a literature buff. God really must have had a sense of humor, because if I had to name my biggest turn-on, it was literature. And he had just recommended a book that I didn't know, that wasn't taught in school. If I were single. there would be no better pick-up line.

His hands were on my hips then, steadying me. My T-shirt had ridden up slightly as I'd stretched my arms to the highest shelves, so his finger made direct contact with the exposed skin just above the waistband of my jeans. A small burst of fire pulsed through me, starting at the places where he was touching me and spreading to the rest of my body.

"I don't think you're crazy," Cash said. "I think you're...."

I looked up at him just as he trailed off. It was too dark to tell, but I thought he was blushing.

"I'm what?"

He cleared his throat and ran a hand over his hair. I wanted to touch it, feel the short, dark strands. "I think you're kind of amazing."

And then Cash was murmuring into my mouth, my name on his lips, and I was melting into him, feeling that the same need I'd felt in the library two days earlier. The desire to crawl under Cash's skin, to meld my body with his.

Interview with Sherry Gammon & Unlovable GIVEAWAY!

Today I am very lucky to have the talented Sherry Gammon stopping by an interview and also giveaway. Last week I read Unlovable by Sherry Gammon and it was fantastic. A book I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. You can read my review here. Unlovable is the first book in the Port Fare trilogy.

1. What were you inspirations?

Maggie was based on two girls I grew up with. I like to write about things that bother/haunt me as a way to deal with life’s injustices! It helped my find closure on my friend’s unfair lives.

2. What is one thing that you admire most about Maggie and also Seth?

Maggie: her strength. She Never gave up.

As for Seth, his patience and endurance.

3. What is your typical writing day/night like?

I write at night when the kiddies are in bed. It is nice and quiet. Also, I used to take care of an elderly woman, and I would write when she went to sleep.

4. Can you tell us a little bit about the next book in the series Unbelievable?

Will Maggie and Seth be dropping by? Book 2 is about Cole and his journey to love. There are two woman in his story. One good, one not so good. He has to deal with both. And yes, Maggie and Seth will definitely be dropping by!

5. Unlovable has a beautiful love story. Who are some of your favourite literary romantic couples?

Jennifer Cavalleri and Oliver Barrett the IV, (Love Story by Erich Segal, Bella and Edward, by… well, I think we all know who wrote their story;] and Layla and Majnum written by Persian Poet Nizami Ganjavi.

My Review:

Favourite Quote: With my poor heart pounding wildly, his kiss spilled through my soul, and I was lost. His lips never left mine, yet he was all over my mouth. Never before had I felt anything this wonderful. I knew I'd pay dearly for my surrender, but I'd gladly pay it. I hoped this kiss would never end.

Wow! Unlovable was fantastic. It is such a sweet and tender tale that will appeal to any romantics at heart.

Unlovable is definitely an effortless and addictive read. I had other review books that I was meant to read before this but I thought I would have a little look just to see what it was like and ended up getting caught up in the plot (or should I say the romance) and finished it one sitting. Gammon is a debut author but you would never tell from her wonderful writing. Her prose is filled with plenty of emotion and really is a story from the heart. While I found it easy to read the plot felt a little too perfect at times though. Did it stop me personally from enjoying it? No but it may bother some readers so be warned.

Both Maggie and Seth are well rounded characters. Maggie has a rough life but shows a lot of strength for a a character that has had such a tough time. She is a sweetheart that always seems to put others first. Then you have Seth. A lovable guy with a big heart that would do anything to keep Maggie happy and safe. It would be impossible for anybody not to like these two.

There is also some interesting secondary characters like Cole and Booker. You just get the sense you are beginning to know them so it will be great to get their stories in Unbelievable and Unbearable.

Now on to the romance. For me it is the strongest part of the plot and my favourite aspect of the story. It definitely will make the the heart of any romantic melt. Seth and Maggie have plenty of dreamy romance moments that will make you go awwwwww. But there relationship is not perfect as they have a few obstacles to over come but they never waiver about the way they feel for each other.

Overall, Unlovable is a passionate and engaging read that is perfect for fans of romance. Can't wait more of the Port Fare world in Unbelievable.

Waterfall Wednesday - Week 3 - Chapters 12 to 17

1. In Siena, on her way to the ball at Palazzo Pubblico, Gabi likened her experience to being on the red carpet at the Academy Awards, the goal being "to see and be seen." If you were a peasant, watching from the crowd, what would you be thinking as this procession passed by?

I would think it was amazing! I would be loving all the gorgeous gowns and probably daydreaming one day I will get to attend such an event with a handsome knight on my side!

2. Though quite nervous about dancing at the ball, Gabi discovers a strange feeling of connection to the time, the people, and the society through the unified beauty of the dance. Have you ever been in a position where you felt out of your element, but, in one, pinpointed moment, became a part of or connected to something bigger than your fear?

Recently when my home state was 90% under water. We all banned together as a community and tried to help those who needed it.

3. The kiss. Oh, the kiss. When Marcello finally kisses Gabi, he believes the experience to be proof that they are meant to be together. What did you think about his assumption? Were you surprised at Gabi's reaction to it? Have you ever experienced a kiss that seemed to be prophetic in a similar (or opposite!) way?

I thought the fact that Marcello could tell he true feelings from the heart for Gabi after that kiss was sweet. It made my swoon. I think today we are a bit skeptical about instant love but I do believe it does exist. When I saw my husband for the first time I knew he was meant for. I wouldn't say I knew I was in love but rather that there was a special connection that I hadn't ever experienced before.

4. Many go through their teen years with a subdued sense of immortality. Do you think Gabi has a sense of this teen feeling? And did you think Gabi's converse observation, "Sometimes death came hunting and there was no way to cut it off at the pass." was informed more by the experience of losing her father, her self-admitted closet hypochondria, or the forced maturation of being transported to a different time? How does this observation show Gabi's growth as a character?

I think Gabi did until her father past away. When you lose somebody your love you realise how precious every moment is. For me this showed Gabi was a believable character and showed a lot of depth to her character.

5. In the span of a few moments, Gabi goes from sword-wielding teen beauty to man-killing warrior. Did you think her realization of the finality of death -- and her justification for its necessity -- was realistic? And, in her slippers, could you have done the same?

Yes. Gabi is acting with her instinct by protecting the people she cares for. I would do the same in her shoes.

He bent and took hold of my waist in his hands and lifted me up to it, then settled my slippered feet into the stirrups. All the while he cast me small, lingering glances with his gorgeous, smoky-hot eyes, making me shift in the saddle, feeling uncomfortably warm.

I leaned into him, resting my face against his chest, feeling the ba-dump of his heartbeat, thinking. And he wrapped his arms around me and remained still, waiting giving me time to think, stroking my back, my arms, holding his breath as if he wanted to say more and then thought better of it.

Book Review: Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

My Review:

Favourite Quote: "Takes a lot of tries before you hit perfection." He paused to reconsider that. "Well, except for my parents. They got it on the first try." (Adrian)

Before starting Bloodlines I was in a reading slump. No matter which book I tried nothing was really holding my attention. But Bloodlines fixed that. I loved this book! It was a incredible story that I couldn't get enough of.

Mead is one of my favourite authors. Her writing is unbelievable. Always intensely readable and fiercely entertaining. Together with a plot that is full of tension and twists. This series is a great mix of both the alchemist and vampires worlds. And those two worlds could not be more different.

What I love about Mead's characters are that they are complicated. No cardboard cut-outs of characters here. I have to admit I wasn't sure if I was going to like Sydney as a main character. She is so different from the kick-butt Rose (from Vampire Academy) who is one of my all time favourites. But the more I read Bloodlines the more I liked Sydney. She showed loyalty, courage, kindness and surprisingly strength. I can definitely see her joining the ranks of my favourite characters.

Then you have Adrian. I have always loved him in the Vampire Academy series and I am happy to see him play such a big role in this book. He is charming, quick witted guy who is suffering from a broken heart. At times I may have been a little tiny bit frustrated that he was playing the victim. I know he is hurting (and I would love to make him all better *wink wink*) but it gets a little tired after a while. So I was very happy that as Bloodlines went on he started to show really growth and change as character and even had a hero moment or two.

Jill is such a sweet character. One you want to hug. I really connected with her and am looking forward to getting more of her story as this series goes on. Then you have more some incredible secondary characters like Eddie from Vampire Academy and a bunch of newbies including Trey, Ms Terwillger and Micah. As well as Abe who pops in every now and then and even a visit from Rose.

We all know how much I love a good romance in a story. Well Bloodlines there is no romance yet but rather some delicious chemistry simmering.

And OH the ending! Mead delivers her speciality - a knock-out ending that will leave you craving more. I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger as such but rather something that is going to leave you saying UH-OH this is going to be interesting.

Overall, Mead has delivered another novel that is nothing less than SUPERB. Bloodlines is a must read! Seriously run out and get a copy now!

Mini Reviews #5

Intrinsical by Lani Woodland - Loved it. Intrinsical is such a beautiful and haunting tale. Woodland's prose is gorgeous - "The pain in my chest returned and I gasped from it's intensity, folding myself in half. A clammy chill kissed my skin as the light dimmed, a black fog slipping past the corner of my vision." The plot is full of mystery and is a little creepy. Then you have fantastic characters including a very swoon worthy crush. Overall, an amazing start to this series. Can't wait for Indelible (book #2). Rating: 4.5/5 stars

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin - Unfortunately, I didn't finish this. Read two thirds and just found myself get frustrated. I can see why people are loving this but I am having a hard time liking the characters apart from Mara and also all the drama and twists. I don't get the attraction to Noah and would just like the girl for once to fall for the normal average boy next door. I just don't think I am in the mood for it rather than anything wrong with the book. Probably will pick this up again one day when I can read the series from start to finish and get a resolved ending but right now this isn't the type of book I am looking for. Rating: 2.5/5 stars

Forgotten by Cat Patrick - Really enjoyed this. I absolutely loved the romance in this book. It was so sweet and tender and just made me melt and is pretty much the reason I am giving this book such a high rating. Really, I don't remember much else about the story as I was swooned off my feet. Forgotten is a relaxing and easy read where the romantic relationship steals the show. Rating: 4/5 stars

My Review:

Favourite Quote: "He really was perfect. If only he was perfect for me."

Wow! What an impressive start to an awesome new series! I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Deception.

Deception was so easy to get into with it's engaging writing and perfect pacing. It is a slightly eerie tale that never has a dull moment. At the beginning I thought the plot was going to be a little predictable (but in the enjoyable sense) but there was quite a few completely unexpected twists. I like the fact that Nichols' manage to surprise me. It definitely makes me craving to find out what shocking surprises Nichols' has installed for us in book two Betrayal.

Emma was a fun and likeable character. Despite her struggles she never really moped around but rather got on with things as best with things as she could. I certainly don't think I would have been as strong as her with her family missing, moving into a strange town and suddenly being able to see ghosts. Then you have the mysterious Bennett. He was a hard to character to read at first but by the end of the book his secrets are starting to unravel. I found the more he opened up the more I liked him.

However, the romance fell a little short for me. Emma love life is a little complicated and I don't quite feel the chemistry with a certain guy. I certainly see the potential of a amazing romantic relationship but I don't believe it yet. Hopefully book #2 will change my mind.

Overall, Deception was a fun yet haunting tale with intriguing characters and a fantastic premise that kept me constantly entertained. I can't wait for more.

Waterfall Wednesday - Week 2 - Chapters 7 to 11

1. Gabi's search for her sister is made increasingly difficult by the fight for territory between Forelli and Castello Paratore. At this point, do you think the rivalry is warranted? Why or why not?

I don't think the rivalry is really warranted. I think Castello Paratore is just being greedy whereas Forelli is just protecting their own. However, it is something that will never change (although I wish it would). People will always fight over wanting more than they need. Even today we have wars over territory.

2. Gabi aids Fortino by having his sickroom cleaned out and using steam to loosen the phlegm inside his lungs so he could breathe better. Have you ever found yourself in a situation that required you to rely on home remedies to aid yourself or another? What are some of your favourite remedies?

Yes, I have definitely used home remedies. I have eczema and when I first got it as a teenage it was really bad. My legs were covered and not a clear spot. So my sister and I made this homemade paste of oatmeal, milk and water and it soothed my skin. Even today I usual a natural cream from the chemist which is made for an oatmeal based mix.

3. Marcello and his men don't hide their surprise when they learn that Gabi is skilled with a sword. What did you think of this development? Has you initial impression of Gabi changed? Do you have any secret skills?

I loved the fact that Gabi was able to physically take care of herself! It made her more confident and gave me another reason to admire her strength and courage as a character. I wish I had a secret skill but unfortunately I can't think of one.

4. "Our lips were so close, I could feel the heat of his breath on my skin." Gabi and Marcello's feelings for one another are beginning to stir. What do you think of Marcello as a romantic interest thus far? What do you think of his intended?

I was definitely swooning over Marcello. I love that he is a genuine good guy and the fact that he is a knight just makes him even sexier. I didn't like Lady Rossi at all. I don't think she has a good heart.

5. Marcello and Luca take turns teaching Gabi the dances of Toscana. Would you have liked to attend a ball like the one Gabi was practicing for? Do you like to dance? Do you know any cool dance moves? Extra (not really) points if you YouTube yourself dancing and share the video. Come on, it will be fun!

Ohhhhh I would loved to attend the ball especially if I got to dance with Marcello. There was something so romantic about a ball and getting to dress up in a gorgeous gown (although I am sure it was uncomfortable). I am not a huge dancer myself. I get a bit shy but I think dancing with a partner back then would be easier as you have set moves and you are not all alone out there. There is no way Missie that you could get me to YouTube myself dancing. However my dance moves go a little like this:

Described as "tall, dark and scowling". Jack Pallas, a FBI agent, ticks all the boxes for me. He is strong, witty, stubborn, gorgeous, protective, loyal, sexy, loves to read and rides a motorbike. YUM!

"We should go," Jack finally said. He needed to get out of that office before he did something they both regretted.

She nodded, turned back, and unlocked the deadbolt. She grabbed the doorknob....then stopped.

Jack waited for her to open the door. When she didn't he reached around her, placing his hand over hers. "Cameron, we have to get out of here," he said in a guttural voice.

"I know."

Still, neither of them moved. Jack took his hand off hers and moved it to the deadbolt.

He knew he shouldn't.

But he locked the door anyway.

He heard Cameron inhale unsteadily. Before he could give it a second thought, he brushed her long hair off her shoulder and bent his head to kiss her collarbone.

When she'd finished, Jack said nothing. A moment passed and....

He still said nothing.

Then he fixed his gaze on her and stalked across the room.

Cameron braced herself. With that kind of look in his eyes, he was either going to kill her or--

He kissed her. Hot, demanding sweeps of his tongue against hers. When he dragged his mouth away they were both out of breath.

She caught the glint in his eyes and reached for him just as his mouth came down on hers.

She expected Jack's kiss to be hard, angry, even but instead it was just....wicked.

My review:

The first word that comes to mind after reading Something About You is DELICIOUS!

I haven't read a good old romantic suspense in a long time but found myself craving some especially with a little steam! And Something About You delivered it perfectly with just the right blend of mystery, humor and smexy times.

The highlight for me of this tale is the characters. They are witty and have some spark about them. Cameron is an enjoyable female protagonist. She is confidence and yet at the same time a little vulnerable when it comes to her heart. Then we have Jack Pallas described as "tall, dark and scowling". Talk about making me melt. It really should say though tall, dark, HOT and scowling. I loved his protective nature. He wasn't that controlling-protective but rather that strong-sexy-protective. (I already have my book boyfriend post planned out for him. LOL!)

And when you add these two together you get some off the charts sizzling chemistry! All that tension lead to some unbelievably hot steamy scenes.

But I really liked that it wasn't all about their romance. Something About You still has a good plot as well that keeps you interested.

Overall, Something About You was a fantastic read. I definitely recommend this if you are in the mood for a good contemporary adult romance. This is one of the best I have read!

I mean, I can imagine how that conversation went, or I can hope it went a certain way, but I can’t think it better than Kirsty Eagar can pen it. Absolutely beautiful!

I’ve said this so many times before… Aussie writers have this gift. It’s a magical ability to catapult you into a fictional moment that feels so damn real and full of raw emotion that you can’t help but fully connect and when it’s over you feel like you fell on your ass because there’s no more pages left for you to grab onto. It’s like a tight embrace that makes you feel there… in the moment… and when it’s done and releases you, all you feel is the space around you and nothing comes close to that moment when you were in the story. Truly in the story. That my friends is what Raw Blue accomplished.

Absolutely everything about Raw Blue felt so real to me. Maybe because of the setting and how familiar I am with the feel of the sand between my toes, or a wet towel wrapped around me long after I’ve left the beach, the sound of waves crashing, the smell of sunscreen and not wanting it too close to your eyes or stuck on your hands, the taste of the salty water when a wave playfully takes you down. It’s been a part of me my whole life and this book connected with me in a way that felt true and vivid. Kirsty Eagar has what it takes to guide you into that fictional space that commands your attention and your heart. Captivating and emotional!

Carly is a character so carefully flawed to perfection that I couldn’t help but completely fall for her. Everything she went through, every emotion she struggled with, her moments of desperation, and her times of brief happiness. I can’t remember the last time a character made my heart bleed with paper cut precision. Ryan, sweet lord! Rhino! Can someone just tell me he’s real? He’s actually somewhere out there. What an awesome guy! His last voice message, yup, I’m memorizing it. It was a thing of beauty. But, not just the two main characters, Eagar makes me want to believe all of these characters are real and I actually worry about them long after closing the book. Will Marty be okay? Is Kylie going to make it through? What’s going to happen to Danny next? Shane? Roger? All of them are broken somehow and you just want to make sure they’ll be alright.

So if you get the chance to pick up an Australian book, Raw Blue is a perfect example of their greatness. This book is filled with emotional moments, happy events and wish-they-were-real characters. It will stay in my thoughts for a long time and I can see myself reading it over and over again. I absolutely loved it!

There’s just some things an avid reader can’t live without and that’s fictional greatness, and Aussie writers have what it takes to deliver that. It’s become my favorite writing style and I feel it should be its own genre. Actually, hold on a minute… I’ve made it so. It’s officially a separate genre because hell yeah the writing stands apart and there so denying it. Try one. You won’t regret it…

If their plans succeed, nobody in Rocky Head will survive to see out the new year.

Mini Review:

Favourite Quote: "It was something they'd done a thousand times before. If Jamie went surfing with a mate and paddled in first, he always took time for that final wave. And there was something so familiar in the ritual that for a moment he felt like everything was right.
He felt forgiven."

Saltwater Vampires has a smart and well thought out plot where the suspense will get your pulse pounding. I have read a few other paranormal stories by Australian authors but they have never felt truly Australian but Saltwater Vampires definitely does. The dialogue, the setting, the characters, it all feels like home.

Again Kirsty Eagar has written another story that is fiercely entertaining with a lot of heart. The pace is mostly relaxed and therefore took me a little while to warm up to it. However the prose is so unbelievably gorgeous.

"They stared at each other for a long time. The rest of the world had gone somewhere else and everything that needed to be said was being said without talking. And Jamie knew how much he'd lost."

Not only is the writing incredible but so are the multi-layered characters. They feel real, honest and down to earth. I think it is impossible not to like this distinctive bunch.

Another great thing about this story is that it would appeal to both male and female readers of all ages.

Overall Saltwater Vampires is a fantastic read that is more than just your average vampire tale.

For the period August 31st to September 28th each week we re-read chapters from Waterfall by Lisa Tawn Bergren and answer five questions. To join in on this awesome event visit Tina's Books Reviews.

1. Waterfall opens with the introduction of Gabi, she's depressed, a little angry and is dealing with the feelings of loneliness. Are you connecting with her this soon in the novel? Do you things you like or dislike?

I found that I instantly liked Gabi. The fact that she was a little down and angry is easy to relate too. I felt the same way as a teen at times and I imagine most teens do. The things I really admired about Gabi early on in the story is the way she cares so deeply for her family.

2. Gabi gets to time travel back to 14th Century Italy - The Dark Ages in its prime. It there anytime in history that fascinates you and would your travel back if you could?

Hmmm.... that is a tough one. I think the most interesting time of history for me is late 5th and early 6th century when King Arthur was the leader of Britain. I really enjoy the legend of King Arthur but I wouldn't like to travel back to there as I don't think I would last. But then again there are gorgeous and brave Knights so I could be persuaded to change my mind.

3. Most of the men, including Marcello have a very set opinion about a woman's place. Gabi get manhandled a bit in these first few chapters, and even gets asked if she's a witch. The men are shocked when Gabi rides a horse like a man and shimmies down the castle walls. What do you think of men's mentality back then? Gentlemanly, chauvinistic, simple-minded?

I think it depends on the man in the story. Most of them came across gentlemanly and protective. They do not mean any harm or to be rude. They are just putting the women's safety and happiness before their own. That being said I think they are men in that time that are chauvinistic and mean to women and think them beneath. Just like the present you get a few bad ones too.

4 When Gabi becomes a part of this era, the people are immediately intrigued but suspicious of her. Many judge her by her differences. Do you think this is fair? Have you ever been in a situation where you felt like an outsider or the others were misjudging you ?

I don't think it was fair to judge Gabi but I don't think part of human nature will ever change. I have had brief moments of feeling like an outsider like when I started a new job, college etc however I definitely get misjudged.

5. What do you think the coolest thing would be about living in the Dark Ages? What would be the worst?

My first thought for the coolest thing was the hot Italian Knights but it would be the way appreciate the simpler things in life. The worst, no plumbing equals no toilet and no hot showers :(

My Book Boyfriend - Revisiting Ryan

This week I am revisiting one of my favourite book boyfriends Ryan from Raw Blue as part of Kirsty Eagar Week. You can check out my original post here. What I love about Ryan (also known as Rhino) is that he doesn't give up on Carly no matter. He is a genuine good guy who has had made mistakes but at least he learnt from them. So here is one of my favourite passages from Raw Blue with Ryan.

'No, I mean there's bad things that don't matter and there're some things that really matter.'

His eyebrows twitch. 'You're a weird fish, you know that?'

'I'm not a fish.'

'Dunno about that, you spend a lot of time in the water.'

I start laughing but it turns into a sob. And just like that I start to unpeel. It's caught me by surprise.

Straightaway, Ryan's looking at me and there's nowhere to hide. 'What's up?'

'Nothing. I'm sorry. This is embarrassing. I'm going.'

'No need to go. You cry if you want. Doesn't bother me.'

After a bit, I say, 'It's just hard.'

'Crying?'

I laugh, then sniff. 'No, this. I'm not very good with people. And I don't know you.'

'Yeah, you mentioned that. Isn't that what we're doing now? Letting you get to know me?

'Yeah, but....'

'We're not getting married mate.'

I swallow, When I'm sure I'll be able to keep my voice steady, I say, 'Don't make me feel like an idiot. Every time I talk to you I come off feeling like an idiot. I mean you must think I 'm insane. And I'm not - not normally. I'm just this tired and I don't know -'
'Shh.'
His eyes are looking all the way into me. Fora moment we stare at each other then he looks back at the ocean and I watch the two boys making turtlebacks. I don't make any noise but the tears are streaming down my face. I can sense Ryan occasionally looking sideways to check on me. Something about the two boys reminds of me Danny. The look so innocent, so happy and free. Then my crying turns into sobs, which is really crossing the line, I have to say. It's just so ridiculous. I'm in the middle of a crowd on Dee Why Point, watching the biggest surf Sydney's seen for years with a guy I shouldn't be anywhere near, having some sort of breakdown.
I bury my face in my hands. And then Ryan does such a nice thing. He wraps his arms around my shoulders and pulls me against him. I can feel his body heat through his cotton T-shirt, and directly in front of me are the worn, faded knees of his jeans. But most of all I can smell him. And he smells sandy-warm, like a beach. No one can see my face in there protected by his chest. Which is good because I can't stop crying. I mean, I'm really going for the world record in terms of an inappropriate public breakdown. But it doesn't matter, it just doesn't matter. I'm sheltered.

I am so thrilled to have Kirsty Eagar stopping by my blog today! Today Kirsty is talking about her upcoming novel Night Beach which is set to be published in February, 2012. There is no synopsis for it yet so I am excited that Kirsty was able to share some details with us.

Night Beach – the story

Hey, thank you for having me guys! So, Night Beach … Probably the first thing I should say is that it’s not published in Australia until February next year, and I’m currently in the middle of the edits. What that means is that there is no nice, neat blurb for it as yet. Today is the literary equivalent of me showing you around an unfinished house!

The story is about a girl called Abbie Young. She’s seventeen, and in so many ways, she’s in-between:

Staring at the carnival from a distance. Not sure if I want to go forward and become an adult; liking the candy too much to turn back. Drinking and cars and Kane and freedom. All those glittering lights.

Abbie has grown up surfing at Walls, a break renowned for its graffiti-covered sea wall and aggressive locals. For Abbie, the ocean is a refuge, providing her with a sense of ‘home’, something otherwise lost to her in the wake of her parents’ acrimonious divorce. Since the divorce, Abbie feels like she’s also ‘split’, playing different roles according to each parent’s expectations. But at the beach, she’s in touch with a wilder, truer self.

Abbie has two obsessions. The first is art. Now in her final year of high school, she’s hard at work on an assessment piece that explores ‘beyond the sea’. But the phrase begins to take on supernatural connotations as she becomes aware of the disturbing changes in her step-cousin Kane – her second obsession.

If you didn’t know Kane, you wouldn’t call him hot. He’s got the surfer body, a top heavy V on short powerful legs, and it’s wrapped in a good tan, but he’s also got thick blond hair on his chest and forearms and legs. It marks him, makes him more masculine than surfing’s poster boys …

What Kane’s got, though, is an intensity – compressed ambition. He’s always had it and it makes people notice him. Today, it seems to be stronger and not so controlled, like he’s changed to a higher octane fuel and isn’t sure how to handle the power.

Kane has recently returned from a surf trip overseas, during which he and his friends disregarded the locals’ wishes and stayed overnight on a forbidden island. Kane won’t say what happened on the trip, he refuses to explain the strange wounds on his back, and his increasingly violent behaviour soon sets him on a collision course with an alpha male from the surf break.

What’s more frightening to Abbie, though, is the darkness she senses shadowing Kane. A darkness that seems to be affecting her. As Abbie’s reality begins to warp, she finds herself sucked into the Beyond, a place with links to her own subconscious. A place with its own rules, rules that mean she might not make it back. It was a story that slowly sneaked in my heart and hasn't left and never will. Raw Blue is a regular re-read of mine as I love revisiting the amazing bunch of characters especially Carly. Her story still has the same emotional impact on me no matter how many time I read it. Then you have Saltwater Vampires another beautifully written tale that is dark and entertaining.

I really want to celebrate this amazingly talented Aussie author and spread the word on how awesome Raw Blue and Saltwater Vampires both are. My Review:

Favourite Quote: He bent his head and in a voice that Jack couldn't hear, said, "When you came down the stairs and fell into me, that was the moment.'" Then his lips pressed against mine.

Wow! Hunting Lila is such an awesome read. It is a fast paced, entertaining, intensely readable story that is completely addictive.

Alderson has some dazzling story telling skills. I was completely absorbed in this tale and was unable to put it down until the last page. It has a fantastic mix of supernatural powers, suspense, mystery, action and romance. While the supernatural theme in Hunting Lila has an familiar yet enjoyable feel I thought the military element added an interesting element. Hunting Lila also has an upper YA feel too which makes it great read for those of us who are no longer a young adult but still love our YA.

Lila has a genuine and strong narrative makes her instantly likeable. Easy to relate too especially when it comes to her love life (who hasn't crushed on someone older or someone they have know for years?) and she is also a lot of fun. Then we have Alex. Protective, smart and caring (and it doesn't hurt that he is gorgeous too). There is also a well rounded bunch of secondary characters that I am looking forward to getting to know better in the next installment.

The romance is Hunting Lila was perfect. I was swooning at that dreamy and slightly sexy romance within the first couple of chapters. Lila and Alex had believable and sizzling chemistry together with a relationship that moved at the right pace.

Oh and what an ending! Alderson throws us an unexpected twist that leaves me craving book #2 now despite it not being a cliffhanger ending.

Overall, Hunting Lilia is an engaging and passionate read. I suggest you run out and grab a copy of this impressive debut immediately.

My Review:

Favourite Quote: "And yet, this is part of it too. This deep, dark grief - it kind of shakes you up, makes you appreciate life, love more. It opens your heart."

The River of Time is one of my favourite series so I was super excited to get my hands on an early copy of the final installment Torrent. And what an incredible read! It was everything I hope for and so much more.

Again Lisa Tawn Bergren has written another exciting and suspense filled plot. There are so many pulse pounding moments as Gabi and her love ones are never far from danger. But it isn't just action and adventure but also a insightful and meaningful story. It reminds you to appreciate every moment you have.

Gosh, I adore these characters. They are the type you admire and who inspire you to be a better person. It is always hard to pick a favourite out of this outstanding bunch but it would have to be Gabi with her strength, courage and kindness. She really has grown and mature so much in the series. Then you have Marcello and he is much more than just an Italian hottie. He is smart, loyal, brave and has such a beautiful and caring soul. In this installment Gabi's family plays such a large part of the story. It is great to read a book with such strong and positive family presence.

Now, talk about swoon. Torrent had plenty of heart melting moments. And I was surprised as another character tempted my heart away from Marcello (which I thought impossible). I wish I could say more but I don't want to spoil the book for you. I am hoping (and begging) that Lisa Tawn Bergren will decide to write this character a spin off series because I am in love again!

Overall, Torrent was amazing. My favourite out of the three and a perfect end to an unforgettable series. If you like stories full of adventure and romance then this is a must read.

Alex from Hunting Lila by Sarah Alderson

He was so close I would only have had to move my face an inch or two forwards to press my lips against his neck. I resisted the urge to trace the shadow of stubble along his jawline to the hollow of his chin. His dark blonde hair had been recently crew-cut - I could tell by the thin white line that traced his hairline at the nape of his neck, which stood out against his tan. There was a crease by his eyes that looked suspiciously like the beginning of a laughter line.

Alex is 21 years old, works for a special division of the military, owns a motorcycle and is HOT.

As though he sensed me studying him, Alex turned then walked around to my side of the car. He put his arms around me and I sank my head against his chest, feeling some of the anxiety immediately fade away. He lifted me up and rested me on the bonnet of the car and we stayed like that for a while, me cocooned in his arms with the sun slowly warming us.

"Are you OK? Did they hurt you?"

I shook my head and clutched at this hands. "No, no, I'm fine. Alex, I need to --"

I couldn't say another word because his mouth was on mine again and lights were dancing in my head.

"Happy Birthday," I replied, sitting up. The room spun a little as I did so, Alex's bare chest was like a flashing billboard in Time Square. My eyes were drawn back to it again and again, before my gaze fixed on the shallow dips on either side of his hips that were swallowed up by the waistline of his shorts. It was all I could do not to trace the shadows with the tips of my fingers.

He grinned at me a little sheepishly, setting the tea down by my side.

(My Alex is played by Jensen Ackles from Supernatural. A show I have never watched before but do know that there is two hot guys in it)

Book Review: Brother/Sister by Sean Olin

Through alternating perspectives, they tell the story of how and why their lives spun violently out of control - right up to the impossibly shocking conclusion you'll have to read for yourself to believe.

My Review:

Brother/Sister is an intense read. I am still trying to take it all in and I am kind of lost for words at how I am going to explain this book.

Sean Olin writing is sharp, powerful and extremely gripping. The first chapter just grabbed me and sucked in. Even when I wanted to stop reading because some scenes were too painful and pushed me out of my reading comfort zone, I couldn't. I needed to know what happened.

I don't want to give much away about the plot. Let just say that at the beginning you know something horrible has happened but you really have no idea actually how bad it is. Brother/Sister with definitely surprise you with it's dark and shocking twists.

Will and Asheley, the main characters, are definitely two souls you feel sorry for. No parents that really care about them. As I was reading all I could think was how none of this terrible stuff would have occurred if Will and Ashley actually had positive parents in their lives. It just shows you how important a parent's role is. However, as much my heart went out to Will and Asheley, I felt the plot was stronger than the actually characters. I never really connected with them or understood their actions.

Overall, if you like your realistic fiction edgy, gritty and gut-wrenching this might be the perfect read for you.

Zeraphina must be willing to sacrifice everything if she’s to uncover the truth – but what if the truth is beyond her worst nightmares.

My Review:

We all know that I am constantly saying I am not a huge fan of fantasy but it turns out I am. But only really good fantasy and that is definitely what Blood Song is. I absolutely loved it. For me it was the perfect reading escape.

Zeraphina has always known she is different with her unusual striking looks and her craving for blood which is getting strong each day and calling her to the north. When her older sister Lilith becomes engaged to Prince Amis in the northern land Zeraphina jumps at the chance to visit a place that will bring her closer to the answer she is seeking about her strange condition. There she meets Rodden, the King's advisor who seems to know the answers but isn't willing to tell Zeraphina the truth.

Blood Song has that easy style of writing that is just addicting. You can picture the world, the atmosphere so beautifully without being weighed down by heavy and boring world building unlike some other fantasy books. And then on top of that you have a suspenseful and intriguing plot that keeps you turning the pages.

I adore the main characters. There is something special about them. Zeraphina, is strong, independent and just an enjoyable protagonist. She seeks out the answers she needs even if it gets her into trouble. Also she is never without her cat called Leap and an Eagle named Griffin and they make awesome sidekicks.

Rodden, is one of those dark, sexy and mysterious types. He comes off tough and a little bit arrogant but you know he is a good guy underneath. The relationship between Zeraphina and Rodden, is amusing. They didn't fall over each other. They had plenty of witty banter and you can just see the sparks flying between them. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next with these two.

Overall, Blood Song is a magical read that left me craving more. I definitely recommend this outstanding debut to fantasy and paranormal fans.

Book Review: Taste of Apples by James Laidler

My Mini Review:

The Taste of Apple is written in a verse and it is done well. It is the coming of age story of Pedro who's father walks out on him and his Filipino mother forcing them to move into commission housing. There he meets and becomes friends with Johnny, a street busker who lives in his housing estate and Pedro's life changes.

I love the mix of cultures in The Taste of Apples with Pedro's Filipino background and the Australian setting. I also adored all the Aussie references like James Marsden and the old Olympic Village as I love it when an Aussie book actually feels like home.

The story is gritty and raw in places but also hopeful. I felt like Laidler never held back and therefore it felt a true reflection on life.

The Taste of Apple comes with an accompanying CD (although you can read it without it). I like the mix of media, it added a refreshing take.

The only thing that I found disappointing about The Taste of Apple is when I put it down I found myself losing interest. I was in no hurry to get back to it.

Overall, The Taste of Apple is a good solid read. And I will leave you with my favourite passage from this enjoyable and moving story.

I walk beside him
in a daze,
soaking up the snippets
of his life;
tired
but totally unable
to pull myself away
from his strange
incandescent
glow.

My Review:

As some of you know I take notes as I read. So I thought I would share some of mine for Lola and The Boy Next Door:

Awwww (several times)
Oh please kiss now
Love (more like little hearts drawn everywhere - several times)
What are Blow Pops?
Awww... melting
Swoon (several times)

As you can tell from the above I LOVED IT! It was everything I was hoping it would be with it extraordinary writing, entertaining plot, unforgettable characters and yummy romance.

I love Perkins writing. It is just effortless to read. The pages just fly by and before you know it you are finished. She manages to write another charming plot that has a lot of heart. But her writing strength is in her characters. There is something enchanting about them.

I adore Lola. Multi-layered and far from perfect. Just instantly likeable and a fun character. Somebody I would love to hang out. She doesn't always make the best choices between Max (her boyfriend) and Cricket (the boy next door). Love and relationship are never simple and it is hard to know what is right sometimes. I found her actions and confusion believable.

Then you have Cricket. Just thinking of him brings a small to my face. While I love St. Clair (even though he is short), Cricket is more my kind of guy (and tall). There is something about his energy that makes him irresistible. He is a little bit nervous but ever so sweet and brilliantly smart.

Perkins knows how to write romance. She has the perfect amount of tension and heart melting moments and some seriously delicious kissing scenes.

There was also plenty of Anna and St. Clair and I was glad to see them again. They provided plenty of awwwwww moments of their own.

Overall, Perkins has delivered another amazing novel. Lola and The Boy Next Door is a smart, playful and heart warming story that you shouldn't miss.

With the memory of his stunning physical display fresh in my mind, I gazed at his strong face. His flashing and dangerous blue eyes had always taken my attention. Valek was liquid in motion. As I watched him, one word came to mind: beautiful. His movements had the speed and cadence of a complex dance performance. In comparison, his adversary resembled a newborn colt, lurching and jerking his arms and legs as if this were his first time on his feet. Valek's smooth lunges and graceful parries disarmed his opponent in no time.

"Yelena, you've driven me crazy. You've caused me considerable trouble and I've contemplated ending your life twice since I've known you." Valek's warm breath in my ear sent a shiver down my spine.

“That sounds more like a poison than a person,” was all I could say. His confession had both shocked and thrilled me.
“Exactly,” Valek replied. “You have poisoned me." He rolled me over to face him. Before I could make another sound, he kissed me.

My Review:

Favourite Quote: I could feel his heart beating, feel his mind and thoughts blending with my own as the two of us stood there, bathed in the moonlight and feeling its effects like a drug.
Whoever Chase was, he was mine.

There is a lot of good werewolves books out there but the Raised by Wolves series would have to be my absolute favourite. So I was a little nervous about book two but it didn't disappoint with it pulse pounding plot and awesome characters.

Barnes writing is fast paced and engaging. I love how even though werewolves tales are a popular genre Barnes still manages to make it seem fresh and unique making for such an exceptional read. Trial by Fire has a solid plot that is filled with action, suspense and plenty of unexpected delicious twists.

My favourite part of this series is Bryn. I like that even though her life is full of danger she is drama free. Just likeable and down to earth character who is strong, brave and a great leader. There is a distinctive bunch of secondary characters who are just as fantastic. All the characters are fighters and the underdogs. They never back down and always try to do what is right. You can't help admire this constantly entertaining pack and love the strength of their friendship and loyalty to each other.

Another thing I love is that this series always ends perfectly. It wraps things up nicely but at the same time leaves you wanting more. If only all series could end like these.

Overall, Trial by Fire is enthralling and exciting tale. If you haven't read this series yet and are a fan of all things paranormal and supernatural, I recommend you pick it up immediately.

My Review:

All These Things I've Done surprised me but I mean that in the best possible way. I was completely captivated by this intriguing and tension filled story.

I have been reading quite a bit of dystopia lately and I loved that this novel did not focus on matching people or the government trying to control everybody. In the year 2083 they are plenty of problems and changes but overall it feels more like a realistic future. Chocolate is illegal (EEK! no chocolate would make me crazy) together with a million other things like caffeine, paper without a permit, phones, cameras. I felt the world was very convincing as it feels similar to the stories of the 1920's when alcohol was banned and smuggled in.

This is the first book of Zevin's I have read. I found her prose sharp and alluring. Writing that draws you in immediately. It was perfectly paced story that had a cleverly constructed plot and world.

Anya is part of the Balanchine Family, one of the most well known crime syndicates in the world. Her father use to be the head of it before he was murdered. Anya mother was also killed in a hit gone wrong. Now Anya is trying to do the best she can caring for her ill grandmother, her older brother Leo, who has a learning disability and her younger sister Natty. Anya is a mature, brave and compelling character. I love that she always but her family first. I found the secondary characters to be just as well crafted and likeable as Anya especially Leo and Natty.

Win, is the son of the head of the District Attorney Department and Anya's love interest. So it is has a little bit of the star crossed lovers thing going on. The romance between Anya and Win was passionate and yet sweet at the same time.

The mafia part of the storyline was probably the highlight for me though. I found myself fascinated by this mysterious and dangerous element of the story. I would definitely like to see it play an even bigger part in the next installment.

I am so happy All These Things I've Done is going to be a trilogy. Even though it ended in a good place I felt like the story was just getting started and it has left me desperately craving more.

Overall, I found All These Things I've Done to be a clever and engaging read. Zevin definitely delivers all the right elements in this impressive novel.

My Review:

Favourite Quote: Lily felt a tiny shift in the air. The hairs on her arms stood up. The troopers were coming. She sprinted along the street, examining the Wall for some notch or hole to scurry into. There was nothing - just an endless smooth expanse. Black clouds writhed under the heavy sun as the morning closed on midday.

In one sentence: Fast paced read that has plenty of heart-stopping moments as it climbs to the climax.

Days Like This is a dystopia novel set in in Sydney. Where there is a water shortage due to global warming effects, the government has collapsed and the committee has taken over. They have built a wall to keep the poor and people who would question or fight back with the committee out. The streets are patrolled by the emotionless Blacktroopers. And the children are kept locked inside their homes.

I love the concept for Days Like This. Stewart did a great job of writing a believable and well built world. With all the damage we are doing to our planet, water shortage and extreme weather seems possible and completely scary. I also love the setting. Set in Sydney, I was able to picture it perfectly and it definitely felt Australian.

The plot is a constant thrill ride with danger around every corner. It is just go, go, go right until the end. Stewart's writing is easy to read but I lacked emotional connection with the story. I was entertained but not fully invested in what was happening unfortunately.

Lily is an engaging main character. I always like a character who doesn't give up, who isn't afraid to get amongst all the action but yet is still caring and kind towards others. Then we have Keiran who is just a genuine good guy. Brave, loyal and sweet. We also have a mixed bunch of secondary characters some likeable and some so not so much.

Romance has a very minor role and yet it felt a little out of place and awkward. Maybe the awkwardness had to do with Lily being locked inside her house for so many years and having no interactions with other teens. So possibly this is why it didn't feel natural especially towards Luca. It is has sort of a brief love triangle or rather a moment of confusion. Thankfully Lily's connection to Kieran felt more honest, just lacking spark.

Also Days Like This is a standalone. No cliffhanger and your questions answered. It is so nice to read a book and not be dying for book two.

Overall, despite my issues with Days Like These it is still a good read. It is a smart novel that gets you thinking about the future of the world while it takes you on action packed ride.

My Book Boyfriend #26 - Luke Henry

I have wanted to read Forgotten since seeing Missie's book boyfriend post on Luke. And she was not wrong when she described how sweet he is. Luke plans romantic dates and doesn't give up on a girl who forgets him every day. He is a little quirky as he likes to paint ears and always wears his brown converse sneakers but he has beautiful blue eyes and one dimple smile.

I see the smile first. There is an unmistakable sweetness peeking through the teasing. My armour begins to crumble before I've made my way up to the eyes; what's left of it melts away at the sight of them. Sparkling pale cornflower blue with darker flecks, surrounded by eyelashes any girl would envy.
Looking at me.
Right at me.
Even more than his mouth, his eyes are smiling.

And then he moves closer.
I hold my breath, considering that Luke might kiss me right here in the middle of the commons. Just as I'm deciding whether or not I can kiss with an audience, Luke, staring intently into my eyes, raises a hand towards me face. Slowly, softly, he rubs his thumb along my jawbone. I'm hypnotised by the most perfect kind of touch. Oddly, it feels even more intimate than a kiss.

"Is your mom here?" Luke asks, in a tone both soft and strong. Feeling weak, I tighten the grip on my torso for support.
"No, she went..."
Before I can finish my sentence, Luke is up the entry way step kissing me.
Hard.
His palms are on either side of my face, and the few feet that were between us have shrunk to inches. One inch, maybe.
I drop my arms in surrender, then slowly wind them around this boy before me, tight and then tighter still. Luke kicks shut the front door behind him, lips still locked on mine, and we kiss each other like one of us is dying.
"I can't stay away from you," he whispers when he finally takes a break to breathe. He's staring directly into my eyes with his forehead pressed against mine, and his hands are still holding tight to my face, as if to keep me there and ensure that I look at him right back.
To ensure that I see him. And, boy, do I.

My Review:

Favourite Quote: "Everyone makes choices in life. Some bad, some Good. It's called living, and if you want to bow out, then go right ahead. But don't do it halfway. Don't linger in whiner's limbo."

Fantasy and me have had our ups and downs. I have only read a handful as it is one of the genres I struggle with. But I had heard good things about Poison Study from everyone and they were right, it is AMAZING.

I love the world Snyder created. I wouldn't want to swap places with Yelena with her life at risk every day in but I was completely absorbed in the world. So much adventure and danger it was hard to let go and walk away from this book when I had to. And Snyder's writing is addictive. It is such an unbelievably engaging and satisfying read.

You really get a warm feel for all the characters. What I love about them is they don't feel ordinary. They are that something special, characters you will never forgot not even the secondary. They are all mature, smart and strong. I admire Yelena's courage especially since everyday held danger for her. And Valek there is something very sexy about his dark and mysterious ways. Then you have Ari and Janco who keep you entertained.

While the story does focus on Yelena and Valek building each other's trust and respect their romance is very subtle but it does make your heart melt.

"But you’ve slipped under my skin, invaded my blood and seized my heart.”
“That sounds more like a poison than a person,” was all I could say. His confession had both shocked and thrilled me.
“Exactly,” Valek replied. “You have poisoned me."

Another good thing about Poison Study it will appeal to adults as well, with Yelena in her late teens and Valek in his late twenties-early thirties.

Overall, Poison Study is a spellbinding read. Definitely recommend to all fantasy lovers (although I am sure most have already read this) and also to readers who like me are a little afraid but very curious about fantasy this is a fantastic book to try.

My Review:

Favourite Quote: "Rules? Ixion is supposed to be free of rules, yet it seems as strict as Grave in its own way and more...more dangerous."

Three words: I loved it! Burn Bright is one of those reads that when you are finished you are left saying "WOW I want more" because it such an amazing story.

Burn Bright has one of the most unique and captivating worlds. So refreshingly different but in a good way. It slowly unravels and everything is not what it seems. Also you could, and you will want to, re-read it again to see things you have missed the first time to better understand the mysterious and dark place of Ixion.

The plot is unpredictable and exciting. I couldn't get enough of this story. It is the type of book you read when you should be sleeping, or while you are cooking or during a red light in your car. You know what I am talking about, a completely consuming read.

Retra (aka Naif) is intriguing main character. She is quite but yet still strong. I like the fact that she thinks about things, asks questions and doesn't follow blindly. Retra is definitely a heroine you admire.

There is a little bit of delicious romance. I would call it attraction and connection. It looks like something is building for the future books. There is Lenior the leader of Ixion who I feel Retra has the strongest connection with. And then there is the mysterious Markes, the musician, who was on the barge with Retra when she entered Ixion, who pops up every now and then. Retra has more of an attraction to him. And I am going to surprise you here and say I actually like Lenior more. Yes I am picking him over the hot musician (normally they are my weakness) because I don't think Markes has been in the storyline enough to leave a strong enough of impression of who he really is.

Overall, Burn Bright is an alluring and gripping read that has left me craving the sequel. I highly recommend this to all dystopia, fantasy and paranormal fans.

I have had Shirley visit my blog a couple of times this year already answering my interview questions and also a character interview with Eliza from Fury. And each time it has been so much fun. Seriously Shirley do you know how awesome you are! So when I was thinking of authors I would love to feature this month for Aussie August Shirley was the first name that popped into my head.

A Guest Post by Shirley Marr

Hi everyone, its Shirley Marr here and I’m so excited to be part of August Aussie Author Month and writing a guest post on Irresistible Reads! Now I’ve been asked a lot of weird and wonderful questions in my time about my novel Fury, but I’m going to talk today about the very first question I was posed in public, which went like this:

Person: Is your novel autobiographical?

Me: Um… I hope not. I mean I hope I’ve never murdered anyone before…

I know the definition of fiction. I think there’s probably a little legal paragraph somewhere in every novel that says, “any resemblance in this work to anyone living or dead, or the villain to someone I do really, really dislike in real life is purely coincidental and/or accidental.” Of course everything I write comes from the fantasy la-la-land inside my head.

So my initial response was denial. My novel is so not about me. For starters it’s set in an exclusive private school in a rich suburb. I on the other hand grew up in (as Jaime King from Summer Heights High would say) a “povo” suburb and I went to a Bogan school where there were no blazers and ironed shirts; the uniform was fleecy tracky-daks and a polo shirt. I’ve never been in with a beautiful and popular group and I’ve definitely never been in enough trouble to end up in a police station. I think the most I’ve ever done is get sent to the naughty corner in primary school when the teacher was trying to explain what a “buoy” was (as in the floatation device) and the Feminist-in-the-making inside of me wanted to know why they weren’t also called “girls”.

Okay, let’s look at something a bit more glaringly obvious that I’ve had people draw comparison at: - my main character Eliza has red hair. Occasionally I have red hair (when I am doing in the public doing authory stuff anyway, when I am at home I have black hair. And I wear specs). I chose the hair colour for Eliza as an artistic device, to reflect the red anger inside of her. I choose the red hair for myself cos… I like the colour. So… I have to admit both decisions are based on preference and intrinsically the same. But it’s not like I’m one of those Mary-Sue writers that put themselves in the shoes of their heroine. The last thing I’d want is to come from an unhappy family and one day end up being interrogated in lock-up while I’m wearing a bloodied school uniform.

No! It’s strictly all make-believe. My brief is to work with plot, characterisation and imagination, not write a dairy entry. But something inside of me told me I was in denial. Just like Eliza is in denial. The final straw came when I had a café-writing session with an author friend recently. Despite knowing that I had to concentrate on my own work, I couldn’t help peaking at what she was doing and…

Me: Cristy… how on earth do you write so fast?

Cristy Burne: It’s easy; I just make the characters do what I like. They’re like my puppets.

Me: Oh. But my characters are like my… babies. They’re like… part of me. Unless I feel what they’re feeling, I can’t write it properly. And if they were ever taken away from me, I think something in me would diiie.

So I finally admitted it. Everything I write is a little piece of me. Eliza is a little bit me. And it is true. The gated community in Fury is reminiscent of the gated suburbs that make up most of the loathing and ennui of Perth. I’ve never been part of a vigilante act (and its not something I condone), but the seething teen angst I felt in high school and the “expected” acts of bullying and ostracising I witnessed built up this rage in me that I knew I could write out and that I so desperately wanted to write out. There are little pieces of me scattered all throughout the novel. Even the postcard that Eliza carries around with her is real in my life, and I’m delighted to feature a photo of it on Irresistible Reads. Even in a way, Neil is real. Maybe that’s not his name in real life, but maybe the person the novel is dedicated to may share some of his initials.

And you know what? I don’t think I would change anything about the way I write. I spend every single day of my life writing and it’s impossible for me not to leave a little piece of me behind. I believe that if I didn’t put every single iota of me into my writing, if I didn’t make myself feel everything single emotion that each of my characters go through and didn’t spend every minute alternatively crying, agonising, laughing and sighing while I wrote, then my writing wouldn’t sound true. And I think a reader can pick someone writing by the numbers or faking something a mile away.

And for that I am not afraid to admit that when I write, although I am making up a story, every single word is the truth. So if the story of my main character is also my story, then I don’t mind being a Mary Sue at all.

My Review:

Favourite Quote: "But since I've been out here, on this trip...it is like I've started to remember what it is like. To feel alive. To feel anything. And all I'm saying it that you never know how much time you have."

AMAZING! I love this book. It makes me want to go a road trip right now. Seriously I want pack a bag and hit the road with my guy for a few days and go on an unexpected detour.

I am really having a hard time explaining why I adore this book even after reading it twice. So here is 5 reason why you should read this book:-

1. It is intensely readable. Matson's magnetic writing is captivating from page one. Matson also vividly describes the places Amy and Roger stop at, the people they meet along the way and especially the food they eat (warning: this book will make you hungry) so you feel like you are on the journey with them.

2. It is impossible not to like Amy and Roger. Both are complicated yet down to earth. They are characters you will enjoy spending time with.

3. Unforgettable secondary characters. I loved Bronwyn, Leonard, Drew and Lucien. They are absolutely charming, entertaining and a highlight of this story.

4. The sweet and heart warming romance that will bring a smile to your face. You could see the connection with Amy and Roger. No instant love but something tender that builds naturally as they get to know each other.

5. All the added little extras to this book like the postcards, playlists, travel journal entries, receipts, photos, menus and quotes at the beginning of each chapter makes this such a funky and gorgeous read.

Overall, an incredible story that I highly recommend. Amy & Roger's Epic Detour will take you on a unforgettable journey.

My Review:

Favourite Quote: He pulls back, grins, and she is just young enough to mistake this feeling - this rough, violent swell - for love or something like it.

Wow, Cargo is such a breathtaking story. I wasn't quite expecting so much emotion from this book. My heart is still feeling a little raw and tender after finishing it.

Cargo is a real and honest read that captures the lives of three teens Gillian, Frankie and Jacob set in an Australian beach side town, the year 1992. It is a quick read at just 200 pages told in alternating chapters between these three characters who aren't friends but yet their lives are intertwined. While it captures some blissful moments of life as a teen and it really focuses on those heart aching times.

Jessica Au's writing is stunning. Her prose is gorgeous and is full of emotion. She makes every sentence sound beautiful.

The window grates open under her hands and the breeze is a shock of cold across her cheeks. When the horn calls for the third time, she feels the sound like the lowest note of a tuba through her ribs. She can just make out a lone cluster of lights that might be carrier navigating the darkness. Welded steel on great tracts of open water: she reminds herself that there have been swimmers who have crossed these same distances, some not much older than fifteen.

The characters are compelling. They each deal with issues that we all struggle with as a teen and you can really feel their angst and pain. While each of their stories held my interest, Gillian's point of view was my favourite. Completely absorbing and moving. It really got under my skin and nearly brought me to tears a couple of times.

Overall, Cargo is an impressive debut that is full of heart. Jessica Au is definitely an author I hope to read more from.

My Review:

Favourite Quote: "I might not be ready to pour out my feelings to the world, but I’d had enough of trying to ignore them."

Wow! Ultraviolet is an incredibly original and hypnotic read. I just loved how refreshingly different it was from the plot to the characters to even the style of writing. Everything was unique and it that made for such a standout read.

Ultraviolet is the story of Alison who is placed in a psychiatric unit after complete breakdown. She is also the main suspect in the murder case of the most popular girl at school Tori. But nobody knows what happened including Alison as there is no body. All Alison can remember is one moment she was arguing with Tori then next thing she had disintegrated into thin air. Is Alison going crazy? Or there an extraordinary answer for it all?

The plot pulls you in from the first page and you are completely hooked until the end. It is filled with some very delicious unexpected twists. I really thought I knew what was going on but I had no idea. I love that Ultraviolet was not what I expected because it ended up being so much more.

R.J. Anderson writing is alluring and vividly descriptive especially when it came to describing Alison condition of synesthesia - tasting words, how each letter has a personality and a colour and in general just seeing so much more than the rest of us. It was definitely interesting element to the story and made Alison an extraordinary character.

"Seconds shaded into minutes, and the butterflies in my stomach had turned into biting horseflies, when a candy-pink squeal of delight rippled down the corridor towards me."

Alison had an utterly convincing voice. She had to deal with some hard situations - locked in a mental facility, possibly killing someone, thinking she might be going crazy but her reactions were always believable. Now Faraday in a unforgettable character. Smart, kind and surprising. I only wish we had gotten more of him because I really enjoyed his presence in the story.

"Dark chocolate, poured over velvet: that was how his voice tasted. I wanted him to follow me around and narrate the rest of my life."

As for the romance it definitely didn't feel like the typical young adult romantic situation. It was that something special and yet it didn't take the focus away from the amazing plot.

Overall, Ultraviolet is a stunning out of the ordinary read. I definitely recommend it to people looking for something different but yet still an exceptional story. Now I just need to get my hands on more of R.J. Anderson's books.

Adam is a singer, song writer, guitar playing, gorgeous guy. He is intense and flawed but has a beautiful soul.

Adam lay down on my bed, stretching his arms above his head. His whole face was grinning-- eyes, nose, mouth.
"Play me," he said.
"What?"
"I want you to play me like a cello."
I started to protest that this made no sense, but then I realized it made perfect sense. I went to my closet and grabbed one of my spare bows. "Take off your shirt," I said, my voice quavering.
Adam did. As thin as he was, he was surprisingly built. I could've spent twenty minutes starting at the contours and valleys of his chest. Be he wanted me closer. I wanted me closer.

I look at her there in the shadows of the shut-down city, her hair falling onto her face, and I can see her trying to figure out if I’ve lost it. And I have to fight the urge to take her by the shoulders and slam her against a shuttered building until we feel the vibrations ringing through both of us. Because I suddenly want to hear her bones rattle. I want to feel the softness of her flesh give, to hear her gasp as my hip bone jams into her. I want to yank her head back until her neck is exposed. I want to rip my hands through her hair until her breath is labored. I want to make her cry and then lick up the tears. And then I want to take my mouth to hers, to devour her alive, to transmit all the things she can’t understand.

I run my fingers along her neck, her jawline, and then cup her chin in my hand. And stop. We stand there for a moment, staring at each other, savoring it. And then all at once, we slam together. Mia's legs are off the ground, wrapped around my waist, her hands digging in my hair, my hands tangled in hers. And our lips. There isn't enough skin, enough spit, enough time, for the lost years that out lips are trying to make up for as they find each other. We kiss.

My Review:

In one sentence: Glow is an out of this world love story that takes you on a fast paced thrill ride.

I know some of you are reading the synopsis thinking spaceships, sci-fi, that is so not your thing but Glow isn't just for sci-fi fans. It definitely will appeal to fans of paranormal or dystopia reads with it's great blend of romance, adventure and suspense. I know that with other sci-fi reads I have struggled with the world building but this is an effortless read that you become quickly absorbed in.

I loved that the action happened less than 50 pages in and from there on in it was a completely pulse pounding read. Every page seemed to be full of excitement and suspense. Although some events in the story seemed a little bit too convenient and hard to believe. But despite that I think the plot and the world Ryan has created is the strength of this book.

Glow is told in two points of view, Waverly and Keiran. I am a big fan of dual narration especially when it works well and flows seamlessly into each other and it definitely did in Glow. Without it I think I would have been lost as Waverly and Keiran were apart for majority of the story and it really helped give you the complete picture of what was going on.

Waverly is a compelling character. Mature, strong, a fighter and most importantly likeable. I love that she doesn't give up easily and isn't afraid to ask the hard questions.

However with Keiran I struggled to get a real sense of who his is. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed his point of view, it provided plenty of heart-stopping moments, but at times I felt his character was a little inconsistent. I also felt this way about Seth another important character. Sometimes they were nice honorable guys but the next minute they were being cruel and heartless. This may have been just because of their world was falling apart around them but I felt a little confused. I look forward to figuring them out in the next book.

Overall, Glow was a gripping and intense start to this series. I can't wait to see what happens next.

My Review:

Favourite Quote: We stood there for a moment, people swirling around us, laughing, greeting one another, kissing on both cheeks in Italian fashion. And our deep stare into each other's eyes was as intense as a kiss of our own. It was like he was speaking to me, singing to me, all through that long, silent, sexy-as-all-get-out look.

Cascade is awesome. It is another brilliant and addictive addition to what is quickly becoming one of my favourite series. It has the perfect mix of adventure and romance making for a fully satisfying read.

I am still surprised at how captivated I am by this series especially since it is definitely kind of historical which is just not my thing at all. But that just goes to show how much of a incredible writer Lisa Tawn Bergren is. Her writing just keeps you completely captivated in this stunning tale.

The plot is fast paced that has a level of tension that constantly keeps you on the edge of your seat. Even more than the first instalment. It was like I could not read this fast enough.

I love spending time with these character as they bring humour and heart to this tale. Gabi is still the same strong heroine who's strenght and loyalty is inspiring. Marcello would have to be one of the kindest characters out there. And just when you think you couldn't possible swoon any harder for him you do. Then you have Lia and Luca and their banter provides lots of entertainment.

"Lia aimed shifted and waited watching one man peek out time and time again. She let her arrow fly anticipating his next peek at us and it pierced his eye.

“Okay that’s just going to make ’em mad ” I said.

“Three hundred and ninety-two ” she said to Luca tossing her braid over her shoulder and taking aim again.

“Saints in heaven ” he said to me rolling his eyes “how much deeper in love can I yet fall?"

The romance was beautiful. It made the romantic fool in me very very happy. Gabi and Marcello's relationship is sweet and tender. They definitely have that out of ordinary dreamy type of love.

Overall, Cascade was a perfect reading escape. It is passionate, meaningful and magical. The only problems is I need Torrent like right NOW!
