Solid (Solid #1) by Shelley Workinger
Publication date:  July, 2010
Source:  Thanks to Shelley Workinger

Teens who discover they were secretly genetically altered before birth are brought together at a classified site where they forge new friendships, find love, develop "super-abilities," and even unearth a conspiracy.

Mini Review:

Solid was a fun and engaging read that I devoured in one sitting.

Workinger writing had a really great flow making it an effortless read from start to finish.   The plot had a familiar feeling yet it managed to still surprise me a couple of times.  The first half of the book had great pacing but the second half felt a little rushed and I would have liked it to be a little more detailed.  That being said it is only 220 pages so I think Workinger fitted in as much as she could in that small amount of pages.

The characters are instantly likeable and definitely will bring a smile to your face.  Clio, does feel like the average girl making her easy to relate too.  While the secondary characters were an entertaining bunch.   There is also some romance. But that is were I had a little trouble.  While I thought it was sweet I couldn't understand why Clio and Jack had a instant connection.   I would have like a little more build up.

Overall Solid was a good start to the series.  It definitely left me wanting to read more.

Overall Rating: 3.5/5
Writing: 4/5
Plot: 3.5/5
Characters: 3/5
Romance: 3/5
Cover: 2.5/5 - I like the purple on the black background.  It certainly makes you look twice.

I agree with your review! Solid was an entertaining book with a likeable main protagonist. But like you, I wish there were more details.

The summary lacks for details and after reading your review it would seem so does the book. However, it also sound like the characters are worth a read and I do like the science fiction aspect. Thanks for the review.

This does sound like a fun read! and I completely agree about the cover - boring.

I have this on my Kindle but haven't had a chance to read it yet.

Based on your review, I'll give it a go :o] Nice job!

The cover does not say 'Read Me' but I've learned that covers are often misleading both in their appeal and their non-appeal---sometimes even an ugly duckling surprises me :o]

I have this one waiting for me on my Kindle, I'm excited to read it:) Though the instant attraction bit is a bit bothersome, the rest of the story sounds really interesting. Awesome review Nic!

This one sounds found, and I kind of like that it's not very long, and that's a really good offer! I'm going to try to check it out :D

You know how important romance is to me, so if it wasn't very well developed here, that would have been a let down for me. Still, the premise seems very interesting.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Nic.

Instant connections between characters always bothers me...but this one does still sound like an interesting story. I might give it a chance (especially with that great deal).

Great honest review, Nic! :)

Hm... with so many good reviews and now your brilly review, I must consider this book. I also like the build up in the romance, but if it still works okay in the end it shouldn't bug me too much.

I thought the ending was rushed too and was solved a little too simply. I also agree with your thoughts about the romance; it was cute, but not really swoon-worthy.

This sounds good, but I think the insta-love would bug me. Still, the story does sound interesting.
