My Review:

Favourite Quote:  With my poor heart pounding wildly, his kiss spilled through my soul, and I was lost.  His lips never left mine, yet he was all over my mouth.  Never before had I felt anything this wonderful.  I knew I'd pay dearly for my surrender, but I'd gladly pay it.  I hoped this kiss would never end.  

Wow!  Unlovable was fantastic.  It is such a sweet and tender tale that will appeal to any romantics at heart.  

Unlovable is definitely an effortless and addictive read.  I had other review books that I was meant to read before this but I thought I would have a little look just to see what it was like and ended up getting caught up in the plot (or should I say the romance) and finished it one sitting.  Gammon is a debut author but you would never tell from her wonderful writing.  Her prose is filled with plenty of emotion and really is a story from the heart.  While I found it easy to read the plot felt a little too perfect at times though.  Did it stop me personally from enjoying it? No but it may bother some readers so be warned.

Both Maggie and Seth are well rounded characters.  Maggie has a rough life but shows a lot of strength  for a a character that has had such a tough time.  She is a sweetheart that always seems to put others first.  Then you  have Seth.  A lovable guy with a big heart that would do anything to keep Maggie happy and safe.  It would be impossible for anybody not to like these two.

There is also some interesting secondary characters like Cole and Booker.  You just get the sense you are beginning to know them so it will be great to get their stories in Unbelievable and Unbearable.

Now on to the romance.  For me it is the strongest part of the plot and my favourite aspect of the story.  It definitely will make the the heart of any romantic melt.  Seth and Maggie have plenty of dreamy romance moments that will make you go  awwwwww.  But there relationship is not perfect as they have a few obstacles to over come but they never waiver about the way they feel for each other.

Overall, Unlovable is a passionate and engaging read that is perfect for fans of romance.  Can't wait more of the Port Fare world in Unbelievable.

My Review:

Favourite Quote:  "He really was perfect.   If only he was perfect for me."

Wow!  What an impressive start to an awesome new series!  I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Deception.

Deception was so easy to get into with it's engaging writing and perfect pacing.  It is a slightly eerie tale that never has a dull moment.  At the beginning I thought the plot was going to be a little predictable (but in the enjoyable sense) but there was quite a few completely unexpected twists.  I like the fact that Nichols' manage to surprise me.  It definitely makes me craving to find out what shocking surprises Nichols' has installed for us in book two Betrayal.

Emma was a fun and likeable character.  Despite her struggles she never really moped around but rather got on with things as best with things as she could.    I certainly don't think I would have been as strong as her with her family missing, moving into a strange town and suddenly being able to see ghosts.  Then you have the mysterious Bennett.  He was a hard to character to read at first but by the end of the book his secrets are starting to unravel.    I found the more he opened up the more I liked him.

However, the romance fell a little short for me.  Emma love life is a little complicated and I don't quite feel the chemistry with a certain guy.  I certainly see the potential of a amazing romantic relationship but I don't believe it yet.  Hopefully book #2 will change my mind.

Overall, Deception was a fun yet haunting tale with intriguing characters and a fantastic premise that kept me constantly entertained.  I can't wait for more.

Saltwater Vampires has a smart and well thought out plot where the suspense will get your pulse pounding.   I have read a few other paranormal stories by Australian authors but they have never felt truly Australian but Saltwater Vampires definitely does.  The dialogue, the setting, the characters, it all feels like home.

Again Kirsty Eagar has written another story that is fiercely entertaining with a lot of heart. The pace is mostly relaxed and therefore took me a little while to warm up to it.  However the prose is so unbelievably gorgeous.

"They stared at each other for a long time. The rest of the world had gone somewhere else and everything that needed to be said was being said without talking. And Jamie knew how much he'd lost."

Not only is the writing incredible but so are the multi-layered characters.  They feel real, honest and down to earth.  I think it is impossible not to like this distinctive bunch.

Another great thing about this story is that it would appeal to both male and female readers of all ages.

Overall Saltwater Vampires is a fantastic read that is more than just your average vampire tale.

My Review:

Favourite Quote:  I could feel his heart beating, feel his mind and thoughts blending with my own as the two of us stood there, bathed in the moonlight and feeling its effects like a drug.

There is a lot of good werewolves books out there but the Raised by Wolves series would have to be my absolute favourite.  So I was a little nervous about book two but it didn't disappoint with it pulse pounding plot and awesome characters.

Barnes writing is fast paced and engaging.   I love how even though werewolves tales are a popular genre Barnes still manages to make it seem fresh and unique making for such an exceptional read.  Trial by Fire has a solid plot that is filled with action, suspense and plenty of unexpected delicious twists.

My favourite part of this series is Bryn.  I like that even though her life is full of danger she is drama free.  Just likeable and down to earth character who is strong, brave and a great leader. There is a distinctive bunch of  secondary characters who are just as fantastic.  All the characters are fighters and the underdogs.  They never back down and always try to do what is right.  You can't help admire this constantly entertaining pack and love the strength of their friendship and loyalty to each other.

Another thing I love is that this series always ends perfectly.  It wraps things up nicely but at the same time leaves you wanting more.  If only all series could end like these.

Overall, Trial by Fire is enthralling and exciting tale.  If you haven't read this series yet and are a fan of all things paranormal and supernatural, I recommend you pick it up immediately.

My Review:

All These Things I've Done surprised me but I mean that in the best possible way.  I was completely captivated by this intriguing and tension filled story.

I have been reading quite a bit of dystopia lately and I loved that this novel did not focus on matching people or the government trying to control everybody.  In the year 2083 they are plenty of problems and changes but overall it feels more like a realistic future.  Chocolate is illegal (EEK! no chocolate would make me crazy)  together with a million other things like caffeine, paper without a permit, phones, cameras.  I felt the world was very convincing as it feels similar to the stories of the 1920's when alcohol was banned and smuggled in.

This is the first book of Zevin's I have read.  I found her prose sharp and alluring.  Writing that draws you in immediately.  It was perfectly paced story that had a cleverly constructed plot and world.

Anya is part of the Balanchine Family, one of the most well known crime syndicates in the world.  Her father use to be the head of it before he was murdered.  Anya mother was also killed in a hit gone wrong.  Now Anya is trying to do the best she can caring for her ill grandmother, her older brother Leo, who has a learning disability and her younger sister Natty.  Anya is a mature, brave and compelling character.  I love that she always but her family first.  I found the secondary characters to be just as well crafted and likeable as Anya especially Leo and Natty.  

Win, is the son of the head of the District Attorney Department and Anya's love interest.  So it is has a little bit of the star crossed lovers thing going on.   The romance between Anya and Win was passionate and yet sweet at the same time.

The mafia part of the storyline was probably the highlight for me though.  I found  myself fascinated by this mysterious and dangerous element of the story.  I would definitely like to see it play an even bigger part in the next installment.

I am so happy All These Things I've Done is going to be a trilogy.  Even though it ended in a good place I felt like the story was just getting started and it has left me desperately craving more.

Overall, I found All These Things I've Done to be a clever and engaging read.  Zevin definitely delivers all the right elements in this impressive novel.

My Review:

Fantasy and me have had our ups and downs.  I have only read a handful as it is one of the genres I struggle with. But I had heard good things about Poison Study from everyone and they were right, it is AMAZING.

I love the world Snyder created.  I wouldn't want to swap places with Yelena with her life at risk every day in but I was completely absorbed in the world.  So much adventure and danger it was hard to let go and walk away from this book when I had to.   And Snyder's writing is addictive.  It is such an unbelievably engaging and satisfying read.

You really get a warm feel for all the characters.  What I love about them is they don't feel ordinary.  They are that something special, characters you will never forgot not even the secondary.  They are all mature, smart and strong.  I admire Yelena's courage especially since everyday held danger for her.  And Valek there is something very sexy about his dark and mysterious ways.  Then you have Ari and Janco who keep you entertained.

While the story does focus on Yelena and Valek building each other's trust and respect their romance is very subtle but it does make your heart melt.

"But you’ve slipped under my skin, invaded my blood and seized my heart.”
“That sounds more like a poison than a person,” was all I could say. His confession had both shocked and thrilled me.
“Exactly,” Valek replied. “You have poisoned me."

Another good thing about Poison Study it will appeal to adults as well, with Yelena in her late teens and Valek in his late twenties-early thirties.

Overall, Poison Study is a spellbinding read.  Definitely recommend to all fantasy lovers (although I am sure most have already read this) and also to readers who like me are a little afraid but very curious about fantasy this is a fantastic book to try.

My Review:

Favourite quote:  "Most of what I say is complete truth. My edit button is broken."

I was excited to read Hourglass.  I mean how could you not be with such an intriguing synopsis and gorgeous cover.  And while I ended up really enjoying Hourglass I did struggled at the beginning.

The start was a bit slow for me.  It lacked that something special that makes you get caught up in the story and care about what is happening.  But half way through things changed and there was action, plot twists and chemistry between the characters and I began to feel captivated by Hourglass.  And even though the concept of time travel is not unique this did feel like a fresh take on this supernatural element.

Emerson is an enjoyable protagonist.   She is brave, strong and quick witted character and is a stand outs in the sea of likeable YA lead females.  Then there is Michael, he is loyal, smart and gorgeous.  You know the typical leading man.  I liked him but he is kind of forgettable once you read the book.  There is nothing wrong with him I just didn't feel the swoon.

The secondary characters however are strong and distinctive.  I especially loved Kaleb (a lot more than Michael, no there is not a love triangle, well not really, okay only a little).  And the villain he would have to be one of the most surprising and fascinating characters in the story.

The romance was sweet.  Much like the rest of the book it took me a bit to warm up to it.  I got frustrated at the beginning because the characters had this instant-attraction-love thing but did this no whole we can't be together dance.  Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.  And it didn't at the beginning. But as I got to know the characters better and understand the reasons behind their actions I ended up liking the romance.

Overall, despite my rocky start with Hourglass I did really enjoy it.  And will be definitely reading more of this series.

My Review:

Gateway is good.  Really good.  I enjoyed everything about this novel - the strong writing, the believable characters, the captivating plot and the subtle but sweet romance.

Garner has written an impressive debut.  Her writing is quick and engaging and the plot has quite a few surprising twists.  Like I completely didn't see that coming twists and I mean none of them.  And that is a hard thing to find these days.  I really got caught up in this enthralling and convincing world and finished it within 24 hours.

Gateway is not all paranormal.  At the start of the book Ember wakes up in a hospital after an attempted suicide.  So it does deal with some serious issues briefly adding some more emotional depth to the story but it isn't a depressing read.  It is still more of action-packed, mysterious type of story.

The characters are well rounded and well written.   Ember, the main character, struggles with being different.  She has a genuine narrative making it easy to relate and connect with her.   While Taren is an intriguing character.  He is the type of guy that is the first one there if anybody needs anything.  Just a great guy.

There is a touch of romance between Ember and Taren.  They have plenty of tension that builds up nicely as the story goes.  It definitely has you eagerly reading to see if these two will act on their attraction.

Overall, Gateway is a exceptional dark and appealing paranormal novel.  I can't wait to read more of this world.

My Review:

Favourite Quote: "Ask me if I sparkle and I’ll kill you where you stand.”

This Side of The Grave was a blast to read!  It is full of action and adventure, smexy romance and plenty of laugh out loud moments.

Frost writing has great pacing constantly keeping you on the edge of your seat while being entertained especially by the dialogue full of humour.  I don't think this This Side of The Grave is the strongest plot wise in the series but still it is good.  Frost still manages to come up with interesting ways to keep Cat and Bones and the gang in danger.

My favourite thing about this book and the whole series is the characters.  My friend Tina ~waves~ uses this term "it is like visiting old friends" and I think that is what reading this series is like.  Cat and Bones is one of the most amusing couples.  I love their playful yet sweet relationship.  They still have a great spark even though this is book 5.   Although some of their sexy time had me laughing so bad that I had to but the book down and until I got it together again.   And how could forget the distinctive bunch of secondary characters especially Vlad.  I love the witty banter between all the characters.

Overall, if you looking for a fun, fast paced and sizzling paranormal adult read, then I suggest giving this series a try.

My Review:

Favourite Quote: Blake titled his head at her as if she was a particularly tricky problem to solve.  Their eyes locked, and for one delirious moment Winter had the sense again that Blake wanted to kiss her.  It was an irrational, impossible, wonderful instinct - an instinct her body reinforced through its reaction.  Flushed with heat, her pulse quickened, and everything stood out in exquisite detail.  The stars in the sky, Owl Mountain, a tooth of darkness in the distance, a stray lock of Blake's hair stirring in the breeze, the sensual curve of his lips, and  his eyes.  Most of all his eyes.

Isn't that quote gorgeous?  Winter's Shadow is a dark and appealing read that is so beautifully written.  It's pages are full of intrigue and mystery that make it hard to put it down.

Hearle writing is hypnotic.  He has a great eye for details especially when it came to describing the setting.

Through the broken pane of the stained glass window she could see the remnants of an ancient graveyard, all but hidden by the tall grass and weeds that had crept in from the surrounding woods.  Blackened tombstones rose above the grass here and there like strange fungi, weathered by the elements and the passage of time.  Standing over of the graves, dressed in a simple gray suit, was a young man.

The pace starts very slowly, maybe a little too slow in the first half but it does pick up and then you find yourself completely captivated by this tale.  The plot is refreshingly different from other paranormal reads out there. Hearle has certainly created an interesting and unique concept that is full of dark and eerie secrets that gently unravel ensuring you are kept in suspense until the end.
 
Winter's Shadow is mainly told from Winter's POV.  We do get flashbacks to 1878 and Blake's narrative briefly that allows us to understand the story better.   Both Winter and Blake are likeable and well crafted characters.  However, Blake would be the standout out character for me.  He was a complex and alluring.

The ending was satisfying but at the same time wanting more.  I am left hoping there is more to Winter's and Blake's story. 

Overall, Winter's Shadow is a strong debut novel.  It you are looking for an exceptional paranormal romance that is smart, spellbinding and original than you shouldn't miss this.

My Review:

Saltwater Moons is a beautiful and touching coming of age story.  It is a story about being young making mistakes and how we learn and change from them for the better.

First up, the writing is gorgeous.  There is poetry scattered within it's page.  It is a gentle kind of prose that subtly effects your emotions.   Just absolutely beautiful writing.

"A quietness descended between us, a stillness I didn't know how to break."

"But plans come to nothing when your story unravels in a direction you never imagined."

And Gittus voice reflect true life especially when it comes to sex, dating and friendships.  She handles these issues with such honesty that is sometimes missing from YA.

Saltwater Moons is a character driven novel and all are well written (even the one I didn't like).  Sun is easy to relate too and someone you care about as she struggles with her relationships - romantic, friendship and family.   She has a romantic soul and a character who makes mistakes.   Stupid mistakes like we all do as a teen.  But in the end we learn from them as did Sun.    Tycho, gorgeous, artistic type of soul who isn't without his flaws.  However he paints, makes music, knows poetry and can surf ~swoons~.  Mark though is one of the biggest jerks I have read in a while.  I really, really, really disliked him but they are plenty of guys out there like that in real life.

Overall,  Saltwater Moons is an impressive and eloquent story.  I am definitely excited to see what Gittus has in store for us next.

My Review:

Favourite Quote:  Some ideas are not born of logic and good sense. They are made of clouds and cobwebs. They sprout from nowhere and feed on excitement, sprinkled with adventure juice and the sweet flavor of the forbidden. The psyche moves from the realms of the ordinary and takes a delicate step towards the unknown. We know we shouldn't and that is exactly why we do.

Guitar Rose Highway is a fun read. It is quirky, charming and vibrant story that captures the joy and angst of being a teen. 

Lowry's writing has a very lyrical feel and also a little bit different.   There is multiple points of views and no punctuation in parts, snapshots and poetry giving it a very unique format.  It kind of feel likes a happy place between a verse and prose novel.  Also this book is a little bit dated written in the late 90's and has a hippie-grunge kind of feel but I enjoyed it and the memories it brought back.  

The story and the characters really capture how it feels to be a teen with such raw honesty.  Focusing on how you feel your parents don't get you and the feeling of being restricted.  It also has the parents' points of views in a couple of parts showing their feelings. 

Rosie and Asher are amusing and heartwarming characters.   They are the kind of characters that grow on you more and more as the story goes on and in the end you don't won't to say goodbye.

The is a touch of romance that is sweet, tender and a little bit awkward like first relationships are.   It just brings a grin to your face.

Overall, Guitar Rose Highway was an enjoyable, slightly off beat read that I wish I had read as a teen.   I can't wait to read more from Lowry.

My Review:


Invincible Summer is completely different from what I expected.  When I look at the cover I think summertime fun, romance, a story told from a girl's perspective.  But I couldn't be more wrong.  Incivible Summer is a powerful and HEARTBREAKING story about family. 

It is told from Chase's point of view, the second eldest in a family of five children, over the period of four summers, set at their beach house.  Chase is an outstanding character.  So well fleshed  out.  He is a character you really feel for and just want to hug and never let go.  Chase has so much weight and responsibility on his shoulders for somebody of his age. 

The rest of Chase's family I have mixed feelings towards.  Loved Claudia and Gideon.  Noah would make me mad and then I would love him again the next minute.  And Chase's parents annoyed me and I would love to rant on about them but I don't want to spoil the book.  They are parents who need to be more responsible for taking care of their children and their own actions.  But no matter how I feel towards the characters, they were all believable and well written.     

Invincible Summer plot deals with some compelling family issues head on.  Moskowitz writing is raw and gritty. It gets under you skin and will cause an emotional reaction.  Whether it be tears or anger. Both for me.

There is one thing that bother me a little, the ending.  I wanted better closure with their relationship with the Hathaways (neighbours).  But then I guess everything doesn't always get sorted out in real life.

Overall, Invincible Summer is a really good but intense read.  I recommend it to fans of contemps who like their stories a little edgy and very emotional.
