So, I have been signing up for some reading challenges for 2011 when I noticed there was none for Aussie YA books. I know a few bloggers who are passionate about Aussie YA so I thought why not host a challenge to encourage more people to read Australian young adult fiction. So with a lot of help from Nomes at Inkcrush, together we have created the Aussie YA Reading Challenge 2011:
The challenge is as follows:
Australian participants - Read at least 12 young adult books by Australian authors from 1st January, 2011 to 31st December, 2011.
International participants - Read at least 6 young adult books by Australian authors from 1st January, 2011 to 31st December, 2011.
They can be old or new titles, however no re-reads.
It is open to everyone. You don’t have to be a blogger but you MUST POST A REVIEW. Reviews can be posted anywhere - Blogs, Goodreads, Shelfari or non-bloggers can even do a guest post on a blog like mine.
You can join anytime. The challenge runs from 1st January 2011 to 31st December, 2011.
There will be prizes throughout the year and guest posts and interviews from some awesome Aussie authors.
If you sign up by the 25th January, 2011 you could be the lucky winner of one of the following titles, thanks to Nomes at Inkcrush. These are some of Nomes' favourite titles that are available internationally. Open to everyone as long as The Book Depository ships to you.
Getting Started:
Create a post for the challenge listing some of the titles you are wanting to read (you don’t have to list them all just post some ideas of what you are thinking of reading) and link back to this post.
Place one of the buttons or create your own in the side bar of your blog.
Non-Bloggers: Post your list of books (just a few titles again) in the comment section of this post.
Sign up with the link at the bottom of the this post, linking to your challenge post.
Non-Bloggers just put your Goodreads, Shelfari or this post link in.
Reading Ideas:
You can check out the following links for some reading ideas:
Goodreads - Favourite Aussie YA, Aussie YA Paranormal & Fantasy, Aussie YA 2011 Releases, My Aussie YA Shelf
Buttons: (you can use the top pic or the one's below or create your own):-
They are so many wonderful other challenges (from Off the Shelf to Vampires to Kindle) out there at the moment that are worth checking out as well. Here are some of my personal favourites and they all help inspired me to start my own little challenge: The Story Siren Debut Author Challenge, The Contemps Challenge, The Bookette British Challenge.

This is such a great idea Nic! It seems you and Nomes have been very busy organising this.
You can count me in for this challenge :)
This is so awesome - I'll be back to add my link once I've made the post :)
and yay for everyone who is joining in :)
Such an awesome challenge, Nic and Nomes! I'll definitely be taking it :D
Count me in ;)
Janelle
Nic!! Loving the challenge hun!! You and Nomes did a fantastic job! Can't wait to start:)
Tina(goodreads)
Awesome! Making my post now. :)
I don't know how it happened, but somehow my link got a typo...? Instead of "Aussie" it says "Ausie," which is weird since all I did was copy & paste it. So, I had to do a new post with the typo. But at least the link works now. :p
Fantastic idea! I've book marked this and will come back and join the fun after the Xmas countdown :) Love the buttons too!
I am contemplating joining this one, although not sure about committing to 12 books and writing a review of every one!
Thanks for all the comments and joining in!
@ Marg - The reviews to have to be long ones and if you don't reach the challenge it is okay. It is really all about supporting Aussie YA authors and help spread the word how awesome they are :)
Oh, this challenge looks fantastic! What an awesome idea. There's amny on that list I'd love to read, and thanks for highlighting them. I promise to come back and enter...I'm thinking of doing a massive challenges post for all the challenges I hope to participate in.
Tina
Hey, really a great idea for a challenge, thank you for hosting it [and thanks for getting back to me about my posting problem, Nic ;)].
I love Aussie YA and can't wait to read more of it!
Here is my list of what I plan to read:
Becoming Bindy Mackenzie and Dreaming of Amelia by Jaclyn Moriarty
Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta
Guitar Highway Rose by Brigid Lowry
Beatle meets Destiny by Gabrielle Williams
A Little Wanting Song by Cath Crowley
Those are books I'll be able to get for sure, but I'm willing to read more ;). Sadly, it is sometimes very difficult to get Australian books here in Europe.

Thanks for organising, Nic. I'm game. No rereads makes it tough as I've had a big two years, but definitely Hollywood Ending, Everything Beautiful and I'm wondering whether After the Fire, A Still Small Voice (Evie Wyld) counts because it's set here and she's lived here. Shutterspeed, and I'll see what emerges from the publishers throughout the year. We can review on our own blog, I guess?
@ JudiJ - Thanks for signing up. Yes, bloggers can do their review on own blog.
Non bloggers - goodreads, shelfari or guest post. You have some good books on your list. I didn't even have Shutterspeed on my radar, so thank you.
@ Janina - I love your list :)
Such a lovely challenge:)I would love to participate, but am not sure if I have time to do another reading challenge, as I am already doing 2 in 2011...
This is wonderful! I wish I had time for another challenge, because there are so many great Aussie books I want to read.
I had promised myself I'd only do one challenge next year (the British author challenge, heh) but I don't think I can resist this one...
Ok... so I know for sure I'm getting The Piper's Son... and I got four other melina marchetta books so that's five. I'll need to find more Aussie Authors... but I'm in!!
Great idea! I just entered and put a post up on my blog. Now to hunt down these books!
Thank you everyone for all the wonderful comments and support :)
I'm quite excited because this is my first challenge. It's a great initiative, especially to introduce people to Aussie YA :D
I have signed up for this. I can't wait. YAY!
Yay! I am so excited to see more people signing up :)
Hey Nic, decided to sign up for the this challenge. This will be my first reading challenge. Cant wait. YAY!!!!1
Oops! Can you delete the Watermelon lip Balm link? I accidentally entered just my blog link! Oopsie. >.<
Will re-do. My bad. D:
I'm an international participant, but I'll probably go for 12 or more books, anyway. My brother is obsessed with the Ranger's Apprentice series and has been trying to get me to read them for ages. They fit with the challenge and it will give me the necessary push to finally read them instead of several of the other books I keep putting in front of them! :-D I'm also going to check out some of those lists linked in the post and try to pick a few more to reach (or pass) the 12 books.
I was really hoping someone would do an Australian challenge. I have just drafted my sign-up and so I'll be linking up next week when it goes live. Thanks so much for the challenge and the mention!
Finally a challenge that will get me to read more Aussie talent.
All linkied up, can't wait to read some of the Aussie books I've seen reviewed on your blog and Nomes' too.
I had already planned on reading lots of Aussie lit this year before seeing this challenge. Can't wait to get started.
1. Jellico Road & 2. Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta
3. I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak
4. Feeling Sorry for Celia by Jaclyn Moriarty
5. The Dead Of Night by John Marsden
Nic I've been meaning to sign up for this!! I kept hearing about the girls talking on Goodreads about it. I've read a few Aussie books the past couple months and have LOOOOVED them, so I'm super excited for this challenge. :)
Let's see, a couple books I was looking at are:
1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
2. Looking for Alibrandi 3.The Piper's Son by Melina Marchetta
4.Six Impossible Things
5.Raw Blue
...and I'll have to keep looking :) I doubt I'll stop at 6 reads, but this is exciting!
OMG! I thought I had already signed up!!! I even read my first YA Aussie book already! LOL, Just forgot to add my link to the Linky thingy. :P
Hi Nic,
Will there be a place for us to link our reviews?
Hi Nic!
I'll definitely join your challenge. I'm getting more and more into Aussie writers--I haven't found one I don't enjoy yet:) I've already read a couple (Book Thief, Stolen, Francesca) but here are the ones I plan to read in 2011:
Six Impossible Things by Fiona Wood
On The Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta
I Am The Messenger by Markus Zusak
A Little Wanting Song by Cath Crowley
Raw Blue by Kirsty Eagar
Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta
Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta
I read Stolen already in 2011 but I won't count that one unless I'm down to the wire:)
4 books in and loving it!
Hey Nic - it's Lyndsey from the Bookers!
I'm just starting the challenge. Thinking of reading Little Wanting Song, Jellicoe Road, Piper's Son, I am the Messenger and Book Thief.
My sign-up only says "Goodreads". I meant to put my name but I thought there would be a seperate line for that. Oh well.
Hey Nic, I've just joined the challenge, I didn't realise a lot of the books I wanted to read were by Australian authors; (Rebecca Lim & Alexandra Adornetto!) I just finished Saving Francesca the other day! 1 down 5 to go! :)
Jasprit
Okay, I'm joining in, Nic! (A little late, but reading Jellicoe Road has officially convinced me.) I'll post about the challenge on my blog this weekend. :)
Count me in! I read Stolen and Saving francesca in this year and I found Aussie books are great! And I am reading Sorry for Celia. But do these three books count?
By the way, I have just started blogging recently. I still haven't figured out how to "Place one of the buttons or create your own in the side bar of your blog." So, I'll do it later.
I just signed up...
I think I've read all the Melina Marchetta available here but Im not going to count them..
I've got:
Markus Zusak's I am the Messenger
AJ Bett's Wavelenth
Gabrielle William's Beatle Meets Destiny
Jaclyn Moriarty's The Spell Book of Listen Taylor
John Marsden's Tomorrow, When the War Began and his The Dead of the Night.
I know its almost June but I just signed up for the challenge today and posted about it on my blog. I listed 12 books I'd like to read and then I'll pick the 6 from those. So excited to get started!
Hi Nic! I can't believe it's taken me this long to sign up! No excuse for bad behavior! :)
But here's my tentative list:
Stolen
Looking for Alibrandi
Jellicoe Road
Finnikin of the Rock
Raw Blue
Beatle Meets Destiny
Graffiti Moon
A Little Wanting Song
Burn Bright
Six Impossible Things
to start with!
Thank you so much Nic. This blog is awesome! See you at GR!
This is a really great idea. Just did my first post, and had such a hard time picking just twelve Aussie YA books. Thanks for the challenge!
Very interesting! I have no expert, but I want have to know more and more, on your blog just interesting and useful information.
Great idea Nic! I'm starting a bit late in the contest but here's my list:

2. Finnikin of the Rock
3. Saving Francesca
4. Looking for Alibrandi
5. Six Impossible Things
6. A Little Wanting Song
At last! I found a good post like this.. Thanks for this informative post! By the way, can you write a post about myspace seo factors? Thanks again!
Great interview, Nic! I'm really keen to read this book. I love the cover.
